My vacuum cleaner's suction is weak, and barely picks up any dirt. How to fix it?

January 25th, 2011

I have a bissell powerforce bagless vacuum cleaner like this:
http://www.kaboodle.com/reviews/bissell-powerforce-bagless-vacuum-purple-berry
And for some reason, it wont suck anything up off the floor. It looks fine, sounds fine and doesn’t have any unpleasant odors. It just simply wont suck anything up…I tried using the attachment hose, which seems to work fine but when I turn the vacuum off, everything that I sucked up with the hose comes out of the vacuum right back onto the floor. How can I fix this problem?

*Currently the dirt container is completely empty, and the filters are freshly cleaned.*
There’s nothing wrong with the hose…At all. If anything the hose is the only thing that works. Its the actual vacuum cleaner that’s not working. No dirt is filling up in the container…It seems to be only picking up fine dust particles…Its like its sucking up the dirt, but instead of storing it in the container, it releases it back onto the floor when I turn the vacuum off.

Is there a vacuum cleaner that ….?

Combines the cyclonic suction of a Dyson but utilizes a bag?

I’ve used Dyson’s (never owned one) and they have tremendous suction power, but I absolutely HATE the bag-less containers because when I empty them the dust goes everywhere and eventually you have to clean the containers and those filters inside.

If there isn’t anything that combines the best of both worlds, what upright (bag using) vacuum do you recommend as the best for a single floor mid-sized house?

I really desire something that can get up close against the edge of the carpet and the side-boards and has good consistent suction power.

Could the motor be burning on my vacuum?

December 31st, 2010

I just was vacuuming and I could spell a strong burning smell like plastic/rubber. Could it be my motor . . .and if so is it worth it to get a motor replaced or buy a new vacuum. The filters are clean I checked and the bag was replaced 2 vacuums ago so its neither of these as the culprit.
This is my vacuum and have had it for about 2 years. I prefer canister and def. bagged as I have allergies.

the smell is coming for the canister itself and its hot.

Is it normal when an electronic air cleaner makes a popping sound incessantly?

December 29th, 2010

I have a Honeywell F300A Electronic Air Cleaner attached to the forced air intake at my home. When the unit is in operation I hear a popping sound which I always took to mean that it was simply the sound of the incoming forced air being cleaned.

Lately however the popping sounds started to get more frequent. So I cleaned the cells on the air cleaner in my dishwasher and vacuumed the pre-filters clean. But this does not really seem to have helped any, i.e. I am still hearing the constant popping while the air cleaner is in operation.

Is this normal? Or is this something I should be taking care of? If its the latter then what could the problem be?

Can a canister vacuum cleaner hepa filter be washed?

Which vacuum cleaner should I get?

November 14th, 2010

okay, so my first vacuum ever was a Dirt Devil. That thing was great in germany when I had super flat and hard carpet (like lenolium floors practically), but when I moved back to the states it lasted me about 2 months on normal apartment carpet.

Next… I figure maybe I should spend a little more and i’ll get alittle more out of a vacuum. So instead of 50 bucks on a vacuum, I go ahead and get a bissell for 120 dollars. YEAH this has gotta last right? Well it did last longer then the dirt devil… but 6 months into it, I was cleaning the vacuum out (declogging, wiping down, cleaning filter, eventually just removing the filter all together to help prevent clogging) and i put up with doing so for a year, cause it picked up some things. I don’t mind going over a room 2 or 3 times to make sure it’s all picked up. I have a dog and a cat that both shed…so i just expect it. for the past 6 months, it refuses to pick up hair period. Instead it started pushing it off the carpet and balling it in little peices all over the place :/ little tiny grey fluff balls on my carpet… fun.

So it’s finally useless to me… i need a good vacuum. I’m willing to spend a good penny, but if it’s gonna cost me more then my old bissell I want a vacuum that wont lose suction, AND have a gooooood long warranty on it.

Was looking into Dyson. I read the pet stuff is crap, but the regular vacuums are pretty nice. I don’t mind bagless messes to clean up (not allergic to anything)… and i don’t mind emptying it out often (to me that’s a plus cause i know it’s picking up ALOT :D )…

Are there any other brands someone would recommend. I saw a commercial for a vacuum that compared to dyson but was more affordable. I wanna say it was shark or something like that… and my friend told me to save up and invest in this brand of vacuum that has a 10 year warranty, and will last you a lifetime, but it’s like 1200 dollars ;_; yikes…

Note my dog hair is long, and my cat’s hair is super short. So i get the nasty end of both worlds in the pet hair department. Plus I have long hair and I would really hate to have my hair constantly tangling up the brush. (might be inevitable though :/)

Why has my electrolux vacuum lost suction?

November 10th, 2010

I have the electrolux "vitesse plus pet lover" vacuum. The vacuum has lost suction but still has suction from the hose. The brushes are not turning underneath either. I have cleaned the filters etc as the manual suggests and have made sure there is nothing tangled in the brushes. Not sure what else to try? Any suggestions much appreciated!

How can I make my bagless vacuum smell good when I use it?

November 8th, 2010

I know you can put dryer sheets and the like in the bags of bag vacuums. Is there something like this that I can do for my bagless? I’ve changed the filter and cleaned the filter screen. Please help! :) Thank you!

Vacuum always clogging

November 5th, 2010

Alright, we’ve lived in this apartment for a year and three months, and we’re on our third vacuum cleaner. The first two were Eureka’s, then we bought a cheap bissel this last time. I had been taking excellent care of my vacuums, right down to washing the dirt cups, filter and cleaning out the carpet brushes with every use. I couldn’t figure out why we were going through them like we were, but everyone suggested that cat hair is clogging them and burning them up. The newest started acting up within two uses (and it’s not a large apartment, and we have one cat who hardly sheds, and we clean on a regular basis. Anyways, I tore the stupid thing apart to find MOUNDS of cat hair clogged in it. There was at least enough to be the size of a softball in the hose. So, how the heck is this thing clogging so fast, and what can I do to prevent it? I can’t be tearing the stupid thing apart after every use, I refuse to shave or get rid of the cat and I can’t exactly just stop vacuuming. Help me please!
Forgot to mention that these were all brand new vacuum cleaners, not used!

Cleaning the tube of a vacuum cleaner?

November 5th, 2010

I’m trying to clean out the inside of my Eureka Altima vacuum cleaner. I have 4 cats, so the cat hair tends to clog up in all the different parts of it and needs emptying out from time to time. I was able to get all of the different filters emptied with no problem, but I am having trouble figuring out how to clean the tube that runs from the bottom of the vacuum cleaner and connects to the tub that the dirt winds up in. It is clogged with fur and I cant get to it. Any suggestions?

Do you think Dyson vacuum is worth investing into?

November 3rd, 2010

I figured out I’ll go with a canister. I used to have another vacuum before but it used to loose a lot of suction and cleaning the filter was a pain in the ass.

Please could you recommend a really good but inexpensive vacuum cleaner?

October 30th, 2010

I bought a Dirt Devil which operates without a bag, but this is absolutely useless.
I have carpets and exposed floorboards, 2 house cats – (and of course a husband;o)), and live on a farm,so the dust and hair will pile up quickly
The suction is practically non-existent and it doesn’t pick up any more. I have thoroughly checked the dust container, filter, hose etc etc and their are no blockages. Sorry to say this machine is only just out of warranty and there is no chance to get my money back.

Yes, I know Dyson etc are really great, but I just don’t have that kind of money free at the moment.

Thanx in advance for your help ;o)
Ha Ha Winkie – his hose is too long!!
To all in the USA -Sorry – forgot to mention – I live in Europe!

Troubleshooting a vacuum cleaner?

October 28th, 2010

I had this vacuum for 2 years it’s "Eureka 4700". Lately I noticed that it’s doesn’t pick up the dir, I bought a new filter (the original was very dirty). Now it works a little bit but it’s not as efficient as it used to be. I checked the brushes and they look fine to me. I don’t know how to make it clean better. Have you had this situation with your cleaner and do you trouble shoot it?

Lost a necklace in the vacuum cleaner.?

October 27th, 2010

The necklace itself it quite small, made of sterling silver. Pendant is about as big if not slightly bigger than the nail on your little finger. The chain is fine and quite short as well.

I haven’t cleaned out the filter of my vacuum in a while, it’s one of these types:

http://www.godfreys.com.au/images/products/10970_Pullman_WetDry_A-031B_15lt_131_MAIN.jpg

So, there’s a lot of cat fur/hair/dust/dead skin cells/etc in there. Is there a way to find it in that pile? I know you could manually sift through the clumps to look for it, but it would definitely take several hours. That and I’m annoying allergic to the dust, etc.

Any help would be appreciated.
I appreciate all the answers. The necklace is quite special to me, it was my boyfriend’s anniversary present. I feel utterly idiotic for having lost it in a vacuum cleaner of all places.

I might as well go sift through the dirt now, thanks everyone.

October 18th, 2010

After I have finished vacuuming my room today, I took the filter bag out and cleaned it.But when I put it back, it was broken. So can I still use the vacuum cleaner? Are there any safety hazards?

Thanks for your answer.

what should I do about my vacuum cleaner?

October 8th, 2010

I have an LG bagless cyclonic vacuum, a 2004 madel cyking I think, it was left to me as part of an inheritance from my grandmother, anyways it’s been good for the last few months I’ve been cleaning the filters etc and lately it’s been over-heating, blowing out dust from the sides (where one of the filters are) and it attracts dirt, it also gives off a bad smell like something is melting, I’ve taken it to Retravision, they didn’t pull it apart to look at it (as I asked them if they did or not) and they say it’s on it’s way out saying the motor is shorting and saying that it’s blowing out smoke when I know it’s just dust, and they’re trying to sell me a expensive new vacuum when I know it can be fixed should I opt to buy a new vacuum or would repairing it be cheaper? the salesperson said that repairing would be twice as expensive as buying a new vacuum, but I think he’s just saying that to sell me a new vacuum

Can my vacuum cleaner be used without the HEPA filter?

October 1st, 2010

I need a new filter. The only one I have is VERY dirty. I do not want to use it b/c it might send all the crap back into the air that it has collected. The type I need is only available online. Is it ok to use the vacuum a few times before I get the new filter in the mail?

Can I wash the Filter Type F 15 from the Dirt Devil Easy Lite Vacuum Cleaner?

September 26th, 2010

Can I wash the Filter Type F 15 from the Dirt Devil Easy Lite Vacuum Cleaner?
The manual explains that we need to just tap the filter and it will be cleaned. But the suction isn’t too good and on a website someone said that they washed it with warm water and I wanted a second opinion. PLEASE let me know! :) ………Just to be sure this is filter type F 15

Why is my vacuum spitting out the back?

May 22nd, 2010

I have a Dirt Devil Envision that I bought after my last vacuum wasn’t being that efficient. My last one was a smaller pink Eureka. Now, keep the bin emptied in it, AND I try to clean out the filter the most efficiently I can – so why are these vacuums still spitting the dirt I try to clean up right back out the back at me?
When you say O ring, do you mean like the belt that goes to the vacuum?

will a cv boot last longer if i apply a rubber lubricant or conditioner to the boot?

May 22nd, 2010

i have a 2004 bmw 325xi, these cars are infamous for tearing cv boots. i believe in preventative maintenance and was wondering if i could apply some type of rubber conditioner or lubricant to moisturize the rubber boot to reduce drying and cracking. if so, i would do this every 2000 miles when i vacuum my engine compartment, vacuum my air filters, clean my MAF, pour in a bottle of chevron techron.
